Devon & Brendan's Lakefront Photography in Skaneatles, NY

I met up with Devon and Brendan one early morning last August for some lakefront photography in the Village of Skaneatles to celebrate their recent engagement. It’s not often that my couples opt for a morning engagement session, but it can actually provide the same vibes as a sunset shoot, but with fewer people and cooler temps. Devon and Brendan share an apartment in the village and wanted to document this exciting time in their lives in the place that they call home.

It was one of those classic Finger Lakes mornings, with dense clouds, a sprinkle of rain, and calm waters on the lake that transitioned into a beautiful sunny day. We started by walking down to the lake to take photos on the dock. I gave some light direction, but honestly, these two were complete naturals in front of the camera. I absolutely loved their joy, and their ability to keep things light and fun for the entire session.

We met up with Devon’s family, who brought tiny liquor bottles to help calm their nerves. (Don’t worry, we got Devon’s parents to participate as well!) I’m all for bringing a little liquid courage if you need it. Whatever you can do to feel like yourselves during the shoot!

Devon, Brendan, and I wandered into town and took some pictures in front of the Sherwood Inn. This gorgeous building is so full of life and has a long history in the community. After that, their Australian Shepard, Dino, joined us for a few photos, including some sweet ones in front of their apartment. Dino must’ve liked the camera because he just couldn’t take his eyes off me!

After a quick outfit change at home (what a luxury!), we headed just outside of town to their camp. By the time we got there, the sun was shining through the clouds, which, paired with the new outfits and location, gave a completely different feel to the shoot. Devon and Brendan walked along the lake, then Brendan took us out on their pontoon boat. This was my first time doing boat engagement photos, and it was so much fun to come up with creative poses in a new setting.

What a special morning doing a little lakefront photography with Devon and Brendan. Their Emerson Park Pavillion wedding this fall is going to be a blast. They make everything so much fun!
